OK, after 15 years of being away from photography, I decided to join the modern digital world.  When I stopped photographing, digital was 1.4 megapixels and the quality was truly awful. Noise was not grain and so forth. Today with 80 megapixel raw files, photographers can do so much more and have immediate results that one could never acquire with film and a darkroom.  Digital has far exceeded all the boundaries of the photographic imagination.
